Hi everyone! Happy summertime! Hope you're staying cool somewhere.
Today I want to chat about foods that pose the biggest choking hazards for infants and toddlers. As little ones begin to explore new things to eat, it can be super easy to give them food items that are too big or too hard to chew.
According to the Family Education website, these are the top 9 food items that represent choking hazards:
- Hot Dogs
- Peanut Butter
- Gum & Hard Candy
When feeding your child, be sure to break any food they eat into soft, small, chewable pieces (not too hot or too cold - this can turn them off the food before they even taste it).
Also remember to stay close while they eat. Sometime toddlers stuff too many bites in their mouth, or run around while eating, which can cause issues.
However, relax! Humans are born with great gag reflexes and are able to cough up what they choke on most of the time. Your child will most likely be able to do the same, it's just important to be close by in case they do need help.
